The role of literacy has never been more important. The Teachers' Standards require that all teachers 'take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, whatever the teacher's specialist subject'. This is something we are passionate about at Sherburn High School.
We want all teachers to embed literacy in every lesson and to make literacy visible for students. Literacy skills are the key to unlocking the magic that the curriculum has to offer, to success in exams and as a platform for the demands of further education, employment and adult life. In an era when excellent communication skills are more important than ever, competency in reading, writing, speaking and listening are vital for long-term success.
We have a consistent and firm focus on teaching literacy in all subjects helping students make excellent progress in developing their literacy skills. Our aim is to provide students with the literacy skills they need to be successful right across the curriculum, thus transforming our students into better speakers, listeners, readers and writers.
We expect all our students to ‘Talk like an expert’ so we talk like a scientist, a mathematician, an artist, a musician etc. Our students use the correct subject specific vocabulary and they articulate meaning accurately through a focus on tier two words.
We proofread our work. If our writing is not excellent, it’s not finished. We are not afraid of challenges in extended writing and we use a range of methods to support this.
