Key Stage 3

KS3 DT and Art & Design

Structure

Sherburn students will experience creative subjects  for 4 hours every two weeks in Years 7 and 8, during these lessons they will learn about Food and Nutrition, Design & Technology and Art & Design (Inc Textiles).

Food, Preparation and Nutrition

Students will learn about how to design and make food products using a variety of ingredients in addition to looking at existing food. Students will be taught basic food preparation and making skills as well as health and hygiene. Knowledge and application of nutrition is at the heart of learning.

Content Overview

YR7 and Yr8 Food Preparation and Nutrition

The pupils will be able to:

Make

  • Select and use appropriate tools and equipment for a food practical task.
  • Demonstrate accuracy when completing food practical tasks – preparing and cooking predominantly savoury dishes safely and hygienically.
  • Demonstrate a range of food skills (weighing and measuring, kneading).
  • Demonstrate and understand good food safety practices to store, prepare and cook food.

Evaluate

  • Test and evaluate final product - is it fit for purpose?
  • Suggest improvements.
  • Use peer assessment to improve their product.

Technical knowledge

  • Develop their understanding of heat transfer – Conduction , convection and radiation
  • Be familiar with food from other cultures and countries
  • Can identify a range of different ingredients and where they originate (grown, reared, caught and processed) eg. flour, milk,
  • Take into account of dietary needs of others e.g. allergies, intolerance or religious beliefs.
  • Make food choices based on the current healthy eating advice.
  • Understand the basic of food science – gluten formation , gelatinisation , shortening and coagulation

Design and Technology

This course involves the study of resistant materials e.g. wood, metal and plastic; their properties and uses in everyday life. Design skills such as technical drawing and presentation will be learnt and used.

Content Overview

YR7 and YR8 Design and Technology

The pupils will be able to:

Design

  • Understand context and write own personal brief
  • Research and select appropriate information regarding existing products and work of others ,target market/user/client wants/ problems and technical knowledge
  • Produce a specification which is justified (links to research)considering the following function, aesthetics ,client/user needs ,environment ,materials and size (Ergonomics)
  • Produce a range of design ideas that avoid fixation. Using presentation skills ,isometric drawing , rendering and modelling
  • Annotate designs which explain their thought process, whether the product meets the brief and how could it be developed (improved)

Make

  • Develop ideas
  • Uses of CAD
  • Can select appropriate tools and equipment (including CAM)
  • Can demonstrate accuracy when completing a practical task
  • Can select appropriate materials
  • Can combine material and components

Evaluate

  • Evaluate the success of the outcome
  • Can evaluate their outcome against the specification
  • Can suggest improvements to the outcome
  • Consider how your work compares to existing products / work of others researched.
  • Can consider the views of others

Technical Knowledge

  • Understand the environmental impact of products, and the responsibilities of designers
  • Understand and use  systems
    • Input
    • Process
    • Output
  • Understand how systems can be used in their product
  • Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control a product
  • Categories and properties of materials
  • New and emerging technologies

Art and Design (Inc Textiles)

Throughout this course students will explore visual and tactile experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They will explore different cultures and environmental issues whilst they learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers.

Content Overview

Year 7 and 8 Art and Design - Art and Art Textiles

The pupils will be able to:

Explore and refine their application of practical skills and record through the use of a range of media.

  • Become confident in using traditional and experimental media gaining a level of expertise (pencil, paint, textiles, 3D making)
  • Identify and apply the formal elements appropriately according to the task
  • Apply greater sophistication to the application of media by exploring skills such as colour blending, colour mixing, technique

Gain confidence in developing and documenting ideas: producing creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

  • To create personal outcomes that draw influence from 1 or more artists (this could involve combining artist’s styles).
  • Explore the theme/concept before developing ideas to inform a personal outcome.
  • Use sketchbooks to develop, organise, refine and annotate the learning journey.
  • Record from direct observation with increasing accuracy and detail with a particular focus on tone/value/form. (From life or photographs).

Understand Art: The analysis of artists work, the formulation of personal opinions and ideas.

  • Be inspired by artists from ranging periods in Art history and cultures
  • To confidently reflect upon their own work and that of others to identify how to improve and develop.
  • Build upon subject specific vocabulary and analysis skills to write and verbally communicate ideas and opinions.
  • Make links to wider global and cultural themes
