SCIENCE - KEY STAGE 5

A-Level Chemistry

GCE OCR Salters B Chemistry specification is inspiring, engaging and enables contemporary Chemistry contexts to be included within the teaching and learning programme. With a realistic, manageable level of content and assessment, it provides an enjoyable teaching and learning experience. There is a practical element to the course which involves the completion of several core practical activities. Students will achieve a Practical Endorsement certificate if they demonstrate competency in the practical skills.

Study Methods

This course will help to develop practical skills that include making observations, collecting data, analysing experimental results and formulating conclusions. Students also gain an appreciation of how scientific models are developed and evolve, the applications and implications of science, the benefits and risks that science brings and the ways in which society uses science to make decisions.

Programme of Study

Year 1 consists of five units:

• Elements of Life

• Developing Fuels

• The Ozone Story

• Elements from the Sea

• What’s in a Medicine?

Year 2 consists of five units:

• The Chemical Industry

• Polymers and Life

• Oceans

• Developing Metals

• Colour by Design

Career Opportunities

• Chemical engineering

• Medicine

• Veterinary medicine

• Pharmacy

• Dentistry

A-Level Biology

Salter-Nuffield Advanced Biology (Edexcel) is an exciting course which stimulates interest and biological enquiry using contemporary and cutting edge developments in biological sciences that are set in real life contexts. There is a practical element to the course which involves the completion of several core practical activities. Students will achieve a Practical Endorsement certificate if they demonstrate competency in the practical skills.

Study Methods

Students learn through a wide variety of activities, from standard practicals to model-building and role plays, together with electronic tutorials and animations. The activities challenge students to engage with ideas and evidence, working individually or in groups. The teacher’s role is more to do with guiding and explaining rather than just transmitting factual information.

Programme of Study

Year 1 consists of four topics:

• Lifestyle, health and risk

• Genes and health

• The voice of the genome

• Biodiversity and natural resources

Year 2 consists of four topics:

• On the wild side

• Infection, immunity and forensics

• Run for your life

• Grey matter

Career Opportunities

• Veterinary science

• Medicine

• Dentistry

• Pharmacy

• Radiography

• Teaching

• Sport and fitness training

• Environmental health

A-Level Physics

The GCE Salters-Horners (Edexcel) Physics course is designed to be a concept-led approach to physics. The underlying physics laws, theories and models are considered in a range of situations and applications. There is a practical element to the course which involves the completion of several core practical activities. Students will achieve a Practical Endorsement certificate if they demonstrate competency in the practical skills.

Study Methods

Much of the course is problem solving with many of the problems being mathematical. Other skills also developed within this course include researching, reporting and presenting. Practical work is also an integral part of the course, in particular there is emphasis on how good measurements are that are taken in the lab, students are also expected to do some practical work at home.
