Subject Curriculum Model
The Modern Languages department is a committed and caring team of language specialists who believe that all children are capable of acquiring strong linguistic skills in one or two foreign languages throughout their time at the High School. Our ethos is to encourage, challenge and nurture our young people in order to allow them to be ready to venture into the international world with at least one European foreign language. We also are looking into introducing Spanish in the near future.
Mrs Sismondi (Curriculum Leader)- French and Spanish; Mr Berland ( French and Spanish) and Mrs Mitchell (German and French) are dedicated to making language learning enjoyable, interactive and achievable for all students.
Teaching and Learning
The department's approach to teaching and learning is rooted within the daily practice and expectations of Sherburn High and within methodical future planning. We endeavour to make learning languages meaningful, providing students with many opportunities for collaboration (peer and group discussion) as well as independent work in lessons. We are committed to providing students with effective feedback in lessons and in their exercise books. We have an MFL DIRT marking code to encourage students to develop their literacy skills. Students are allocated time within lessons and homework tasks to act upon feedback using the codes which they have in the front of their books. We regularly emphasise to our learners that is fine to make mistakes and nurture them with confidence.
Students are also encouraged to express their opinions as well as give full descriptions and accounts in the target language. Students' progress is monitored through regular assessments, both formative and summative.
We confidently believe that the support our linguists receive from home will help them thrive in languages. Parents/guardians can help their son/daughter with homework via ShowMyHomework and they can also encourage them to review their own targets for progress in each skill with The Key MAT, Guide for phonics, German Fridge Sheet, German little words MAT, SAD and an Online revision for GCSE german.
We are organising visit to France and Belgium for Years 8 and 9 in July. This is an exciting trip full of cultural engagement and incredible learning.
