FOOD ALLERGENS ADVICE

Food Allergens in relation to Food products sold to the public under the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation No. 1169/2011

There is new guidance regarding the sale of food products to the public.

Food Provision in school:

The canteen have allergy advice in a booklet for all products they sell. This can be made available to students at the point of sale, so that they can make choices based on accurate information about food products. There are 14 allergens, which will be referred to in the booklet.

These include:

• Cereals containing gluten namely wheat, rye, barley, oats

• Crustaceans (for example prawns, lobster, crabs and crayfish)

• Egg

• Fish

• Peanuts

• Soybeans

• Milk

• Nuts

• Celery

• Mustard

• Sesame seeds

• Sulphur dioxide and sulphites at concentrations of more than 10mg/kg

• Lupin

• Molluscs

The Food Technology department avoids foods containing nuts when taste testing in lessons. When alerted to pupils with other food allergies/intolerances, careful consideration will be given to the viability of the foods in question.

In addition, the Food Technology department and canteen aim to accommodate pupils with allergies/intolerances other than those containing nuts.

Parents of students with allergies/intolerances – charity fundraising bake sales

On the occasion that school holds charity fundraising bake sales, please be aware that we will be unable to provide allergen information to pupils on donated food items. We will attempt to avoid the provision of foods containing nuts, and therefore ask that donations of food for such events are not prepared using nuts; however we cannot guarantee that foods containing nuts will never be present. Students with severe food allergies must carefully monitor their food in these situations.

Parents must alert the school to all allergies

Thank you in advance.
