Barlby School Sports Partnership Programme
Sports colleges and school sport coordinators (SSCos) are at the
heart of a growing network of sporting communities, creating a
dynamic new infrastructure for physical education and sport.
Sports
colleges are part of the Government’s specialist
school’s programme. The overall aim is to increase the
percentage of school children who spend a minimum of two hours
each week on high quality PE and sport, within and beyond the
curriculum, in both primary and secondary schools.
This could be achieved for example by developing school / club
links, offering coaching in different activities to attract other
children, organising training courses for teachers, developing
children as young leaders in sport.

Sherburn
High School and the cluster of primary schools around it are
part of this exciting programme. Barlby Sport College is at
the hub of the SSCo partnership, and employs a Partnership
Development Manager (PDM) who is responsible for the strategic
development of the partnership. Around the Sports College,
there are 5 secondary schools that each has a SSCo who is usually
an existing teacher who is released from the teaching timetable
for 2 days per week. That person is responsible for the development
of school sport in their own school and family of primary schools.
