The School was awarded Specialist Science Status in Summer 2005. This provides
additional funding for the school linked to an ongoing development plan.
Pupils
are already benefiting from Science Specialist Status in a
number of ways:
- An
ongoing program of refurbishment. The first phase, involving
the complete refurbishment of two laboratories and a preparation
area is planned for completion by October 2006.
- A
resource consisting of sixteen laptop computers and data
logging equipment, which is taken out to the local Primary
Schools, and used in the department at other times.
- A
wireless networking system which fully integrates the Science
department with the school curriculum network, and makes
internet access easy from the science block.
- A
varied program of events linked to Science Week 2006, including
a STEM fair (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths),
rocket building and ‘Starchaser’ presentation,
Birds of Prey demonstration and Planetarium. More details
about Science Week are below.
- Initiation
of CASE lessons (Cognitive Acceleration through Science
Education). CASE is designed to develop thinking skills
in the context of group work based around practical activities,
across a series of science lessons.
