The School Games

The school games is the government’s new structure for competitive school sport and a key strategy for creating a meaningful sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. It will involve all young people in years 3 to 13, with a range of opportunities to ensure the inclusion of young people of all abilities and backgrounds through: the school sport coordinator will help to support this new structure within the primary and secondary school and it will be driven by the new school games organiser (sgo). There is 1 sgo for the Selby district and a school sport coordinator (ssco) for each secondary school.

There are 4 levels…

• Intra-School Competition: within a school environment, house teams or form groups competing in varied and regular competition throughout the year, culminating in a School Games Day.

• Inter-School Competition: festivals / leagues taking place between schools at a local level throughout the year, with the best school teams qualifying to take part at the county level School Games Festival.

• County event – a culmination of inter – school competition

• National Event: a major multi-sport event for the most talented young people of school age. The event will provide a showcase for our best sporting talent. In 2012, this will include the use of some venues in the Olympic Park.

The School Games strive to ensure more young people than ever before are able to become engaged and enthused to participate in high quality, meaningful competition within and across schools, supporting them in achieving their personal best. Through the 4 levels of the School Games, young people have the opportunity to:

• Get involved

• Have fun

• Challenge themselves

• Progress

• And ultimately compete against the very best talent.

Young ‘gold’ and ‘silver’ sports ambassadors

At Sherburn High School we have 4 young ambassadors in place whose role is to promote the Olympic Games and the values, and to increase participation in the primary schools and secondary school. They have been working on an action plan…some of their ideas are…. to give presentations in assemblies to promote the Games, to award certificates for demonstrating the Olympic values in competition, to train primary school children to be ‘bronze’ ambassadors. Organise a mini Olympics for the primary schools.
