Personal Development at Sherburn High School

What is Personal Development?
  • Careers Education (Information Advice and Guidance)

• Personal Social and Health Education

• Enterprise and Financial Education

• Citizenship

See below for more details about these topics

Where does it happen?

Personal Development happens both in and out of the classroom.
Each year group has a one hour per week PD lesson, short bites in tutorial time as well as half and whole day activities. Each department helps in the personal development of our young people through the curriculum subjects. There are also opportunities for students to involve themselves in optional extra-curricular activities.

Why do we do it?

We see Personal Development as key to helping young people to develop key skills, to have aspirations, to achieve their best, to live healthy lives and to become citizens who can contribute to their communities and beyond.

What does it involve?

Careers Education

Careers Education is an important element of the Personal Development curriculum. We help students to understand the
world of work and to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to make the most of both learning and work opportunities.

We work closely with the Careers Service (IGEN) and with North Yorkshire County Council to ensure that students have IMPARTIAL information advice and guidance.

The Careers Library is open for students at lunchtimes.
Careers Advisers come into school two days a week to meet students individually or in groups. Students in Y10, Y11 and Post 16 can request a meeting with a Careers Adviser.

Personal Social and Health Education

PSHE helps young people to be positive about themselves, to cope with change, to make informed choices, to take responsibility and to enjoy healthy, safe and fulfilled lives.

Enterprise and Financial Education

Enterprise Education can be about business and money, but it is also about looking for creative solutions to dilemmas, putting them into practice, dealing with change and uncertainty and analysing the results. Students also learn to manage their money and finances.

Citizenship

Through Citizenship, young people develop the skills and confidence to play an active role and make a difference in their schools, communities and wider society. They gain knowledge and understanding of a variety of issues, such as:

  • Rights & Responsibilities

• Laws and Democracy

• National, Religious and Cultural Differences

• Political, Social and Moral Problems
