Sherburn Students Pull Back the Iron Curtain in Berlin

38 students and five staff from Sherburn High School braved freezing temperatures (-10 deg.) as they toured revitalised Berlin just before Christmas. History is all around you in Germany's capital city and visits to the Brandenburger Tor, Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag and Marienborn transit crossing highlighted
the turbulent nature of post war Berlin. Our students were particularly interested in the human stories surrounding the divided city - the ingenious and sometimes fatal escape attempts and the enforced separation of families.

But the modern face of a vibrant, united town situated in the middle of Europe was also on show. Breathtaking views from the Fernsehturm (TV tower) revealed the Potsdamer Platz shopping complex and the new parliament building - a glass dome designed by British architect, Norman Foster.

Students gazed in awe as they strolled around the KaDeWe - Berlin's answer to Harrods - looking for last minute presents, before rushing off to the local Starbucks for a warming hot chocolate!

Head of Modern Foreign Languages Neil Snowdon said ‘Everyone enjoyed themselves and even the Siberian chill prepared us for the snows of early January!’

Christmas Lunch

The Year 10 Student Council at Sherburn High School organised a complementary Christmas Lunch for people who make a valuable contribution to the Sherburn community. The students felt that they would like to say thank you for all the hard work that volunteers put into organisations such as Meals On Wheels, community centre support, youth work, the list is endless… The lunch took place on Wednesday 16th December at Sherburn High and was a roaring success with students working very hard waiting on tables, serving drinks, organising a raffle and giving out gifts. Achievement Support Assistant Jill Smith said that she was extremely proud of the effort students gave to the event and had excellent feedback from the guests!

Oxfam Unwrapped Fundraiser

The ELBS (Environmental Land Based GCSE Science group), Year 7 Garden Club and SHS CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members are all people who enjoy growing their own flowers and produce for pleasure. They realised that gardening in some countries is done for survival rather than pleasure and wanted to help growers that were not as fortunate as they were so agreed to hold a fund raising activity with the aim of buying seeds and tools for someone in the developing world.

A decision was taken to hold a Christmas stall selling festive treats, crafts and of course plants with fun competitions. A locally grown pumpkin was acquired from Ledston and a competition was held with students, staff and parents guessing the weight. Harewood House kindly donated a generous prize of a family ticket to use at the winners leisure during the 2010 season. Chloe Bredesen guessed the correct weight of 8kg, she and her family are looking forward to a fun filled day at Harewood. The Christmas stalls did a roaring trade, who was to know there were so many keen young gardeners and the snow tub lucky dip and guess the number of snowball competitions proved popular, (the total number of snowballs in the jar being 187), congratulations to John Wagstaff who had the nearest guess.

Overall we raised more than £70, enough to Plant an allotment, buy farming tools and buy a rainwater collection system. Thank you everyone, parents, staff and pupils for your support and Thank you to Harewood House Trust for their generous donation of the family pass as a prize. Staff at school are also making contributions rather than sending each other Christmas cards so that should help boost funds also!

Hindu Puja Ceremony

Head of RE, Mrs Fielding performed a Hindu Puja ceremony in her classroom for year eight students. Mrs Fielding greeted students in traditional Hindu costume and welcomed them with ‘namaste (hello/welcome)’ at the door and asked them to remove their shoes before entering.

Puja means to make offerings to an image or picture of one of the gods or goddesses and a Hindu house always has a shrine.

Students gathered around a shrine whilst Mrs Fielding conducted the ceremony, beginning with meditation and prayers. As part of the National Curriculum students learn about different religions and wherever possible Mrs Fielding tries to bring a flavour of each religion into the classroom.

Pride Of Sherburn High

Year 11 Student Brad Appleton was nominated via the PE Department and School Sports Partnership to be a ‘Young Ambassador’ for young people and sport. He had to submit an application form the Programme Development Manager at the Barlby School Sports Partnership. He was one of only two students from the area chosen because of his enjoyment of sport and his leadership skills which developed in year 10 on the sports leader’s course.

He was then invited to a confererence along with other Young Ambassadors. He learnt that his role will be to be a young person’s voice as we head to the Olympic Games 2012.

He will have the opportunity to inspire young people of all ages to get involved in sport both for fun and competition and to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Brad was also invited to speak at The Barlby Primary School Conference on October 8th and to give a presentation at Brayton Junior School on November 10th. Rachel Cale, School Sport Partnership Co-ordinator said ‘This is a great achievement for Brad and I am sure he will be a great ambassador for young people.’

Proud Harvest

The staff and students at Sherburn High School are extending the school’s links with the local community. This year the GCSE Environment and Land Based Studies group (ELBS) have been growing a variety of salad items and vegetables and wanted to share the fruits of their labour with others. They decided to donate a box of their own produce to All Saints Church, Sherburn in Elmet for their annual harvest festival.

The box held a variety of produce including tomatoes, herbs, peppers, chillies, shallots and potatoes among others. The box has since been presented to St George’s Crypt in Leeds which is a charity that provides
shelter and advice to homeless, rootless and disadvantaged people. This charity was started in 1930 to help people who have found themselves with next to nothing as a result of the depression which many people will be able to relate to in the present climate.

Year 7 Theme Week

Over the past week all 127 students in Year 7 have been working in small groups to design a new eco-friendly vehicle. This week has allowed them to work with people they might not usually choose to work with, creating ideas and designs that are good for the environment. As a result, it was clear that the students would need to consider the finer details of being eco-friendly, and the ways in which technologies are changing to allow for this.

Consequently, all their lessons this week from Science, to Geography to English, have been centred on this theme, and the ultimate design and advertisement of a brand new vehicle.

Theme week organiser, Head of Year 7 Miss Wilkinson said “This has been a worthwhile week, showing that students gain a lot from the opportunity to take part in activities such as this. It has really shown some of the fantastic ideas and creations that students can come up with!”
