The Mathematics Department
Welcome to the Mathematics Department
Mathematics
equips students with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse
and change the world. It can stimulate moments
of pleasure and wonder for all students when they solve a problem
for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice
hidden connections. Students who are functional in mathematics
and financially capable are able to think independently in applied
and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess
risk’.
The
Mathematics department is housed in its own suite of five dedicated
rooms,
each of which is equipped with a computer and
projector – one having a fully interactive whiteboard.
The Mathematics team are all specialists and we aim to create
a positive and vibrant learning environment – the access
to a range of practical equipment and a large number of software
packages means we are able to present the subject in a variety
of ways, thus capturing the interest of all our students. |

Key Stage 3 (Years 7/8)
When students arrive in year 7 they are
set based on their performance in the Key Stage 2 tests. This enables
us to stretch and challenge
all students according to their ability. Regular assessment during
the year allows us to move students between sets, if needed,
to ensure that their personal learning needs are being met.
Key Stage 4 (Years 9/10/11)
Students study GCSE over three years beginning in year 9. GCSE
is offered at two- tiers:
Higher – awarding
grades A*- D
Foundation – awarding grades C - G
For those students who find the demands of GCSE challenging,
we offer Entry Level Certificate. Students build up a portfolio
of evidence together with unit tests. These students have the
opportunity to be dual entered for both the Entry Level Certificate
and GCSE in year 11.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12/13)
At Post 16 we offer a wide variety of options for students wishing
to pursue their study of Mathematics beyond GCSE.
Mathematics can be taken at either AS or A Level, comprising
units in Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics
Further
Mathematics can also be taken at either AS or A Level. In
this course units can be matched more carefully
to students’ requirements
and preferences.

Maths Challenges
Every student in the top sets and also our sixth formers get the
chance to sit either the Junior, Intermediate or Senior Maths
challenge organized by Leeds University. The highest scorers
in these multiple choice challenges are awarded a Gold, Silver
or Bronze certificate which are highly valued by higher education
institutions. The scores from these challenges also help us to
identify our Gifted and Talented students.
