Governance

In September 2010, a Shadow Governing Body succeeded the Interim Executive Board which had been put in place by the Local Authority following a period of serious turbulence at the School. This was a major step forward in normalising governance at Sherburn High School. The Shadow Governing Body was appointed by North Yorkshire County Council to undertake all the responsibilities and functions of governance for a period of thirteen months.

During the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the Shadow Governing Body has fulfilled its statutory obligations and addressed a wide range of issues including : school budget, staffing structure and profile, premises, health and safety, safeguarding, school self-evaluation, departmental reviews, tutoring, staff training, school development plan, school policies, Ofsted, sixth form collaborative arrangements, school facilities, constitution for a new governing body, and most importantly the quality of teaching, learning and student achievement.

The Shadow Governing Body was gratified and reassured that the Ofsted Inspection of March 2011 recognised the recent rapid improvement in the School, and that it now has a good capacity for sustained improvement. This augurs well for the future of the School.

I am delighted to report that from 1st October 2011 there has been a return to a normally constituted governing body. This follows parent and staff governor elections and the appointment of Local Authority and Community Governors. With strong leadership, stability and the support of parents, students and the local community, it is anticipated that Sherburn High School will continue to progress and enjoy a secure and successful future.
