The Interim Executive board for Sherburn High School was put in place by North Yorkshire County Council in April 2009. It replaced the Governing Body which was deemed to be unable to fulfil its statutory responsibilities at a time of turbulence for the School. The Board performs all the functions of a normal Governing Body. Its Chair, Chris Lewis can be contacted via the School.

Mr Geoff Mitchell, Head of Tadcaster Grammar School and his Deputy, Mr Martyn Sibley led Sherburn High School as Executive Head and Associate Head until the end of December 2009. They have done a remarkable job bringing stability and firm leadership to the School in difficult circumstances. The Board is grateful to them for the progress they achieved during this temporary arrangement.

During 2009, the Interim Executive board has maintained the business of school governance and has addressed a number of issues. These include: The School budget deficit, staffing matters, School self-evaluation and departmental evaluations, staff training, School Development Plan, the quality of teaching and learning and raising attainment.

The appointment of a new Head is always the most important event for any School. At Sherburn High School, when the vacancy was confirmed, a national advertisement brought a good field of well-qualified candidates. After a rigorous selection procedure, Mr Martyn Sibley was appointed as the person with the best credentials and outstanding potential. As Mr Sibley takes up his permanent post in January 2010, there is cause for great optimism for the future of Sherburn High School.

The Interim Executive board will soon be replaced by a Shadow Governing Body appointed by the Local Authority, prior to a return to a normally constituted Governing Body. Meanwhile, the IEB will continue to support the School and its new Headteacher.
