The Geography Department

Welcome to the Geography Department information page. The Geography Department has a wide range of courses at all exam levels including vocational courses such as Leisure Studies and BTEC Travel and Tourism.

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Across Key Stage three, the department has developed its own schemes of work in order to cover the National Curriculum. Some of the topics covered include Tropical Rainforests, the Geography of Sport, Earthquakes and Volcanoes and in depth studies of Kenya and Japan.

Key Stage 4

Two courses are run by the Geography Department at Key Stage 4. GCSE Geography is studied by most students and involves two exams and an in depth piece of coursework about tourism in Knaresborough. As part of this coursework students spend a day in Knaresborough gathering data.

The Geography Department also runs a double award vocational GCSE in Leisure and Tourism. This involves one exam and two portfolio units (customer service and marketing). Students studying this course spend a day and the Royal Armouries in Leeds and a day at Chester Zoo.

Post 16

The Geography department runs AS and A2 Geography over two years. Students follow the Edexcel Specification B. Subjects covered include rivers, coasts, hazards and weather and climate. Students also undertake an environmental investigation and a research essay. As part of the AS course students spend a weekend in the Yorkshire Dales and also visit a forest ecosystem to study its structure and functioning.
