Extended Services – more than just your average school day!

What are extended services?

Extended services used to be referred to as extended schools – don’t let the name change confuse you! Extended schools are exactly that – schools which have extended the range of services they provide. These ‘extended services’ are not only for the students of the school, but also for their families and the wider community.

These services may include childcare, support for parents, adult learning classes, access to specialist services such as health, and a range of activities for children and their families. Extended Services work closely with libraries, Adult Education, Children’s Centres, the School Sports Partnership, the Youth Service and other organisations to develop these services.

Why are extended services important?

There is evidence that by extending services it can help to:
  • Improve student attendance, behaviour, self-confidence and motivation, and therefore potential for impact on achievement

• Better enable teachers to focus on teaching and learning

• Enhance access to services for children, young people and families

• Support vulnerable children and their families

• Provide wider community access to ICT, sports and arts facilities

What’s happening at Sherburn High?

At Sherburn High School we are already providing a range of extended services and facilities for the students and the wider community throughout the school day, before and after school hours, and during some weekends and school holidays.

We currently offer

• A wide range of extra-curricular activities – such as sports clubs, science, drama, and music

• Family and adult education classes

• Support services for parents – this includes Positive Parenting courses

• Community access to sports facilities and room hire after school, weekends and during holidays. We currently hire out sports facilities to people in the local community and the Youth Service runs a club twice a week.

If you are interested in joining a club at Sherburn High, please speak to your form tutor. If you are interested in using the school facilities, please contact Sherburn High School who will be able to direct your call. For any other enquiries, please contact Extended Services on the contact details at the foot of the page.

What’s happening in the rest of Sherburn?

Extended services are supported in Sherburn High as part of a ‘cluster’. This allows us to develop and expand the services offered to students and the community in partnership with local primary schools. The cluster of schools includes:

• Athelstan Primary

• Barkston Ash Primary

• Brotherton and Byram Primary

• Hungate Primary

• Kirk Fenton Primary

• Milford Primary

• Monk Fryston Primary

• Saxton Primary

Me Too! – Funding for activities out of school

Is your child eligible for Free School Meals or “looked after” (otherwise known as ‘in care’)? If so, then they could access money to attend out of school activities. If your child would like to take part in an activity that takes place out of school time and starts on or after 1st April 2010, all you need to do is contact Extended Services in Sherburn and Brotherton who will help you to complete an application. We will be running a drop in session for anyone who would like further information on the scheme, or anyone who would like help completing an application form on Monday 29th March from 3pm until 4pm in the school library.

Examples of activities that we might fund could be:

- After-school clubs/Breakfast clubs
- Languages, homework/revision clubs
- Scouts/Cubs/Brownies/Guides/Sea Cadets, St John’s Ambulance etc
- Arts, Crafts, Drama and Music activities including music lessons – guitar, piano, flute etc, dance and drama classes
