Extended School is part of a national initiative and provides a range of services and facilities, not only for the students but also for their families, and the wider community. These services may include offering childcare, parent support, family and adult learning, access to specialist services (such as health specialists, advisory organisations such as citizen’s advice bureau), and a range of before and after school clubs. These services are tailored to meet the needs of the local community.

At Sherburn High School we are already providing a range of extended services and facilities for the students and the wider community throughout the school day, before and after school hours, and during some weekends and school holidays.

We currently offer:
• Breakfast club, open five mornings a week
• A wide range of study support activities - this includes a wide range of sports clubs, science, drama, and music

clubs;
Family and adult education classes;
• Support services for parents – this includes Bump and Beyond (a support group for young mums), Riding the
Storm (a support group facilitated by Relate); and
• Community access to sports facilities and room hire after school, weekends and during holidays. We currently hire
out sports facilities to people in the local community and the Youth Service runs a club twice a week.

We are keen to develop and expand the services offered to students and the community and we are doing this in partnership with the local primary schools. The cluster of schools includes:

• Athlestan Primary
• Barkston Ash Primary
• Brotherton and Byram Primary
• Fairburn Primary South
• Hungate Primary
• Kirk Fenton Primary
• Milford Primary
• Monk Fryston Primary
• Saxton Primary

As a cluster the schools will:
• Consult with the community to find out what their needs and interests are;
• Develop partnerships with organisations involved with providing services to children - from specialists, to
hospitals, to police and voluntary groups;
• Develop and deliver new services; and
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the services.

Benefits of extended services
There is evidence that by extending services it can help to:
• Improve student attendance, behaviour, self-confidence and motivation, and therefore potential for impact on
  achievement;
• Better enable teachers to focus on teaching and learning;
• Enhance access to services for children, young people and families;
• Support vulnerable children and their families; and
• Provide wider community access to ICT, sports and arts facilities.
