The Business Studies Department

Sherburn High School offers an exciting array of courses for students to follow from Applied GCSE Business to A-Level Economics.

GCSE

At GCSE level students have the opportunity to discover the world of business through the Applied Business GCSE. This course is equivalent to two GCSEs. From September 2006 students will be undertaking the new Business GCSE which is only available in 100 schools. Students study units on Management, Communication, Human Resources, Small Businesses and Finance.

Only 25% of the course is assessed though an external test; the remaining 75% is assessed through coursework and business investigations.

The ‘real world of work’ is investigated through trips and visits. The most recent overnight visit was to the Ramada Leeds Parkway Hotel where students experienced all the facilities the hotel had to offer and were given seminars by the hotel management team!

A-Level

There are a number of options available at A-Level. Students can either choose Applied Business, Business and Economics or B-TEC Business Studies.

The Applied A-Level offers students the opportunity to conduct in-depth investigations into businesses. There is a strong emphasis on the development of the skills needed to succeed in business such as the development of interviewing skills for recruitment and theory is always related in a wider context. This course is mainly assessed internally and the course forms an excellent base for progression to study at university or entrance to employment

Business and Economics A-Level focuses on the development of finance skills with an emphasis on business. This course looks at financial planning and the wider economy. The course offers excellent progression routes to university courses in either Business, Economics or Accounting.

B-TEC Business is a new course for the school and will be run from this September. The course focuses on practical skills and is 100% internally assessed through several projects.

Enterprise

Sherburn High School will be participating in the National Young Enterprise Company Competition programme for the first time from September 2006. Applications are welcome from year 12 for the project.

Young Enterprise
• Allows participants known as ‘Achievers’ to set up a real company. The achievers have to sell shares and raise capital in the business

• Sets achievers the challenge of electing a board of directors, making a product, marketing and selling the product

• Gives achievers the opportunity to sell the product at trade fairs

The board of directors are supported by a link teacher and industry experts who meet the group once a week at the board meeting.

This is a unique opportunity for students to become part of a real business which they will run. The experience gained is invaluable when applying for either university or employment.

The programme also offers the opportunity to compete in Regional, National and European competitions.
