Broadening Horizons
The department offers opportunity for everyone to access a very
exciting and broad range of approaches to art and design. We
explore a diverse range of media through investigating the work
of artist, both contemporary and traditional. Students learn
to improve their drawing and painting skills in addition to printmaking,
graphic design, IT and photography. We offer courses at both
GCSE and A level.
Visitors
Visiting
artists and experts in the field of art and design are invited
into school to work with students and provide an
insight into their particular expertise. We have recently had
visits from Denise Tindale and will shortly be holding ceramics
workshops with potter Liz Bowe |

Exhibitions
Our students
have exhibited their work in and around school. We take pride
in all of our student’s
art and design work and have a continually changing range
of displays around
the
school. Our annual show takes place in April and May and
celebrates our students success on their GCSE and A Level courses
GCSE Art and Design Exhibition
Year
11 art students completed their GCSE course with an impressive
display of their artistic and creative skills.
All students succeed
in presenting 3 projects and their final exam work. The work
covers a diverse range of approaches and techniques from sculptural
carving, casting and modelling, through graphic design and
traditional drawing and painting. Our students demonstrate their
influences
from a range of sources including a visit to the Yorkshire
sculpture Park and the Deep in Hull. The art department said ‘Our
students have worked hard and have shown a great deal of commitment
to their work. We are proud of the achievements of all our
students and congratulate every one who exhibited their work.’
The exhibition is open to the public please see the calendar
for further details.
Lunchtime activities
Students enjoy the opportunity to extend their artwork through
lunchtime art clubs. Some choose to complete and extend class
work whilst others want to try out their own creative ideas.
Technology
The art department
encourages students to use a wide variety of media including
computers. Students can work on images and
manipulate their own work through access to a network of very
well resourced computers and software including Photoshop and
Paintshop Pro. All our computers are networked and have access
to the internet for research and development purposes
Gifted and Talented
We are pleased to be able to support al students and are lucky
to have a number of very talented individuals. In order to stretch
and challenge these students we provide opportunities to extend
their learning through lunchtime art club. In the Summer term
we have taken a small number of students to Harewood house where
students from other schools work together in developing their
creative potential. Students have had a chance to develop both
drawing and observational skills and experimented with new printing
and display techniques.
