What
is CSA?
‘A partnership between farmers and consumers where the responsibilities
and rewards of farming are shared.’
In our case the SHS (Sherburn High School) CSA (Community supported
agriculture scheme) is made up of parents and staff members, working
together with the garden club to grow fruit and vegetables within
the school grounds.
Do you want to grow your own fruit and veg but don’t
have the space at home?
We would like to invite you to join our now established SHS (Sherburn
High School) CSA (Community supported agriculture scheme) for the
2011/2012 academic year. The scheme offers the opportunity for parents,
pupils and staff to work together.
Over the past year our members have taken home, Chilli peppers,
tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, leeks, shallots, herbs, lettuce,
spinach, spring cabbages, strawberries, peas, beans, courgettes,
aubergines, squash, sweet corn and new potatoes. We even managed
to produce a melon!
How much does it cost?
Membership costs £18 for the year in return for a share of
freshly grown produce, and a little hard work. Produce will vary
with what is seasonally available, so at times there may be plenty
whilst at other times there may be very little, but we can guarantee
that what is supplied will be fresh!
What will I have to do?
Planting days are held about once a month, at the High School on
Saturday mornings on a date agreed by members. When produce is available
collection can be made on these planting days. Members are encouraged,
but not obliged, to help plant, grow and harvest the vegetables
and hopefully some fruit. Any surplus produce is handed over to
the school kitchens and will support our sustainable schools initiative.
We are lucky that the Rural Studies department has a range of equipment
available for our use on two dedicated vegetable plots, a large
heated greenhouse, a smaller unheated greenhouse and a cold frame.
Would you like to meet other parents?
If honing your gardening skills, sharing expertise or just involving
your children in learning about where their food comes from then
please get in touch, we are happy to take on new members part way
through the year. Likewise if having fun, mixed with fresh air and
meeting new people sounds like something you would be interested
in please contact the school. Children are welcome but must be accompanied
and supervised.
